nib Health Insurance Review

nib Health Fund was first established in 1952 as Newcastle Industrial Benefits by workers at BHP Steelworks in Mayfield, who created the medical fund a year later. They went on to merge with other private health funds throughout the 1970’s and 80’s, substantially growing their client base.

They continued to grow through the years since their establishment, seeing upticks in clients through their programs, offerings, and acquisitions. Now, nib service the needs of over 1 million healthcare recipients in Australia and New Zealand.

nib also insures over 130,000 international workers and students in Australia and abroad. Additionally, nib controls World Nomad’s Group, which is one of the top providers of travel insurance in Australia.

nib Health Fund offers multiple tiers of hospital cover and extras cover for their members.

Hospital Cover

There are several different tiers to choose from when selecting hospital cover. The following plans are available in order of least coverage to most coverage.

  • Basic Hospital Cover: The basic hospital plan is the cheapest and most popular option from nib. It covers accidental injury, some hospital services, and emergency ambulance cover. There is no annual limit on this plan.
  • Basic Hospital Cover: The basic hospital plan is the cheapest and most popular option from nib. It covers accidental injury, some hospital services, and emergency ambulance cover. There is no annual limit on this plan.
  • Advantage Hospital Cover: The Advantage plan is one of the most extensive plans nib offers, and covers almost everything except pregnancy. If you want full coverage and don’t plan on having a child, this may be the cover for you.
  • Top Hospital Cover: Top hospital cover is the highest tier of cover that nib offers. It will cover virtually everything, including pregnancy and related medical procedures. If you want full protection or are thinking of starting a family, top hospital cover may be worth looking into.

Extras cover

Like hospital cover, there are several different tiers from which to choose from provided by nib Health Fund.

  • Core Extras: This tier covers basic extras including optical, ambulance, dental, and physiotherapy. Members receive 60% back on each visit up to their annual limit.
  • Core Extras Plus: Core Extras Plus covers the same extras as the previous tier, with members receiving 60% back as well. The only difference is a higher annual limit.
  • Core and Wellbeing Extras: Core and Wellbeing extras cover the same procedures and services as the previous two tiers, with some additional features like chiropractic visits and remedial massages. You’d again receive 60% back until you reach the annual limit.
  • Top Extras: As the name would suggest, Top Extras covers a wide variety of additional services with the highest annual limit of the four tiers. Those who purchase the Top Extras tier will receive 75% back on visits until they reach the annual limit.
